Armistice Challenge
0830 - Sunday 11th November

Hope you're all fit and ready for the Armistice Challenge Run. We're going to use the back left and right overflow car parks (which is through a "No Entry" sign), we'll have it signed but basically please don't park in the "bus parking" or the "sea car park". If you look at this page its labeled Car Park 1 and Overflow Car Park.

Colours of the day are red, white & blue or anything patriotic.

For more details please visit the race website.

Hope you're looking forward to this event!

The course is 40% on high quality "bike path" type trail, 60% on solid sea wall. Road shoes will be absolutely fine.

Navigation is going to be incredibly simple and involves only three turns and we'll have sign posts up and as the venue is physically bounded by the sea, cliffs and a big sea wall you cannot possibly go far wrong! We're able to use the "inside/out" areas now at the new structure they have (basically one of the two buildings there between the two car parks) so that'll be base camp, the start is just about from there and essentially the course is simply a zig zag of trail till you reach the sea wall, turn left, follow the arc of the sea wall all around to the other end, turn around at the Cone of Doom about 50 yards before the cliff, go back the way you came and that's 3.75 miles. (You can view the route here)

Just remember the golden rules

•  Don't run in to a cliff

•  Don't be on a beach or in the sea.

•  Watch out for any fisherman on the sea wall, it's super wide so can't forsee any issues but just keep an eye out for any that are about.

Remember this is a timed event, not a fixed distance event. If you complete at least one lap, then you are an official finisher and will receive a medal, a goody bag and an official finish in the results. If you want to complete the marathon distance, then you'll need to complete 7 loops. We'll have a Half Marathon turn around for folk who want to do 3.5 laps for about 13.1 miles and a 50k add on for folk doing 8 and a bit!

You must have started your final loop by 6 hours 02 minutes after the start and as is traditional with ultra events, this is a strictly enforced time limit. As long as you are out of the base camp before the 6 hours 02 minutes limit you'll be able to complete that loop (even if you finish after the 6:02 hour threshold). There will be no mileage credit for partial laps.

Finally you'll have to tell us when you're finished, not the other way around. As it's a timed event, if you wish you can stop, have a rest and continue, or you can just stop!

We'll have an “official finishers bell” for this purpose, (Rachel will be the keeper!) when you're done for the day, ring the bell and the goodies will be yours!

Lap Counting

At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!

Two Minutes Silence

At 1100 most of the nation will be holding a two minutes silence to mark the centenary of the end of WW1. It is especially apt to be at the coast at Dover where so many embarked for France & Belgium and when you look at the pier at Dover which is visible from Samphire Hoe you're looking at what was Dover Marine Station where countless hospital trains loaded casualties to take them to hospitals around the UK.

The plan is at 1100 there will be trench whistles, bells and flags to signify the start of the silence and then the same to signify the end. If you want something to think about, there were 7942 British Empire deaths per second of those two minutes. There will also be cannons fired from Dover Castle which will likely be audible.

We'll add on two minutes to event limits but we don't intend to adjust times. We all owe an awful lot of brave men buried in green fields two minutes of our time.

Weather

Looks like its going to be a fairly windy day with sunshine and showers, 20mph hour winds and a high of 11C so be fairly chilly and any showers hopefully will just be passing. Hopeful that the sea wall won't be shut as low tide is 0807 but we do have a plan B route if so.

Vegans

We've got vegan goody bags for lots of you, If you'd like one and you haven't got a little "V" on your number please let us know as we have a couple spare or if we give you a "black" goody bag then please ask for a "blue" one.

Coke

I know a few folk don't drink so if you are one of those and don't want the can of beer or cider in the goody bag then please say and we'll trade you for some coke, we've got a few cans tucked away for those that prefer that.

Aid Station

None of the usual running nonsense at Base Camp, so no isotonic drinks, fruit or energy gels, but there will be cookies, crisps, jelly babies, M&Ms, pringles, nuts and all that sort of thing, there is just going to be the one aid station on the course (and it's about a 3.75 mile loop) so we'll have cups of water and squash to drink.

Cups/Bottles

One of our longer term goals is the reduction of waste at events. One way you can help is by bringing a bottle that can be refilled (you can leave it at base camp if you like), thus saving cup wastage or simply reusing cups at the aid station, we have jugs there and the lovely ladies happy to fill up a cup again for you (or help yourself!

Litter

Please, please, please don't! We're always on parole at this location as its a lovely nature reserve. We'll have rubbish bags at the start/finish area and another on the sea wall opposite where the base camp is.

Dogs

Unfortunately due to permit conditions, and hence insurance coverage, we're no longer allowed to let runners run with dogs.

Numbers

Will be allocated at registration. If you're running with us on Saturday then please reuse the number from that event and Elite Number runners don't forget yours!
